The Ki-43 was the Imperial Japanese Army (IJA)'s main fighter during the Pacific War. Although overshadowed by the more famous A6M Zero, it featured similar performance and fought successfully early-war. As the war progressed, Nakajima designers made multiple modifications to keep the plane competitive. Original Video Source: /> "Kato Hayabusa Sentotai" (Kato's Hayabusa Fighter Squadron Song):

AS A STRAIGHT MALE I FIND OSCAR VERY ATTRACTIVE.CUTE LITTLE GUY WITH HIS BUTTERFLY FLAPS.CUTE TAIL. THAT IS WHY I HAVE ABOUT A DOZEN 1/48 HASEGAWA AND GUNZE SANYO MODELS OF OSCAR. TONY WAS NOT BAD LOOKING EITHER. YES,I LOVE JAPANESE AIRCRAFT,ARMY AND NAVY.
GORN CAPTAIN
OH! I FORGOT THIS BEAUTIFUL OSCAR TYPE THREE HAS THE BEAUTIFUL TAIL MARKINGS OF ONE OF THE TREE CHUTAIS OF THE 54TH SENTAI.
Za Sensha Chi-Ha Tan No Ēsu

Everybody agrees, from Japanese pilots 70 years ago to kids like me (born early 60s) that the Oscar was a beautiful aircraft. The rake of her fuselage as it approaches the tail is the nicest bit IMO. However, it was too good at what it was designed for - whispy and light, turn on a dime and shoot straight. I heard it was structurally weak, lacked armor and armament as was slow. I guess maneuverability wasn't such a big deal afterall? Funny how the Bf 110 gets trashed for lacking it.

I'm guessing with an R-1830 in the nose that Hayabusa is much faster than the original.

Beautiful aircraft. One of my favorites in Birds of Steel.
Black Devil of the Ukraine
The top ace in history thinks this is a beautiful machine. Much better looking than the restored FW-190-5 and the IL2M3 Stormovick I just saw flying on Fight for Photography, You Tube channel, for about 10 minutes. This Oscar has the beautiful tail markings of the 54th sentai. 2nd chutai. Phillipines 1944.

The Ki-43 could turn tighter than a Zero, but was about 37 kph (23 mph) slower, and the Zero had much heavier armament. So the Zero was the better fighter.
Black Devil of the Ukraine
Pretty aircraft. They should make a commercial of a cute blonde flying it with her hair blowing in the wind. The way they use to do for cars.

What's up with the dude typing everything in caps?

Le magnifique Nakajima KI-43 III Hayabusa, un appareil vraiment splendide par ça simplicité et son élégance, malgré son armement un peut faible il est mon préféré même de la par d' un parisien grand passionner des avions japonais!!!

COL Neel Kearby, MOH, was killed by a Hayabusa pilot who, knowing that his two machine guns were not enough to knock down a P-47, performed a sideslip and fired directly into the cockpit.

That Oscar must scream with an R-1830 under the cowling.

The downside to putting fuel a plane with very large wings is that it makes it really easy to light on fire.
TheSlot1942
I simply love the look of that elongated fuselage on the Peregrine Falcon. For some reason I find it more aesthetically appealing than the Zero.
THE FLAREON Emmanuel Roman
best used in birds of steel and war thunder the ki 43 is perfect to annoy your enemies
Stu Wylam
A 1200 hp engine in an era of 2200hp engines. Its amazing what they got out of these airframes and the courage of the fighter pilots.
Mark Williams
Somebody should get the plans for the Oscar and start building them for General Aviation sales in the US.  They would sell like hot cakes!
g davis
propaganda w/o purpose. only Shiden-Kai was ever competitive esp. late in the war
vincevega1000
What a piece of junk.
Genuine Sanity
Formidable plane in its time.
Hai Nguyen
Put a pair of 20 mm guns in the wings = perfection  !
