the rolling stones - carol - enhanced sound

The Rolling Stones lip sync "Carol" on French tv - October 19, 1964. Oh boy, camera men in those days really knew how to mess up a performance... missing almost every solo Keith was playing, missing Mick singing the lines; taking the wrong shot about every ten seconds. In Holland there's a saying: doing it the French way, which means: doing things messy... Anyway, this should be played LOUD. Oh, by the way, watch Bill Wyman: he has a six string guitar (six knobs) and at 0.35 it looks as if they changed it into a four string "bass". (Their own equipment hadn't arrived in time so they had to use these borrowed guitars made by Klira. a German make. (Thank you dickirish1.) Recorded on January 3, 1964, released in the UK on the album "The Rolling Stones" and in the US on "England's Newest Hit Makers" in 1964. Rhythm electric guitar: Brian Jones. Vocal: Mick Jagger. Electric lead guitar: Keith Richards. Bass: Bill Wyman. Drums: Charlie Watts. CAROL (Chuck Berry) Oh, Carol Don't let him steal your heart away I'm gonna learn to dance If it takes me all night and day Climb into my machine so we can groove on out I know some swinging little joint where we can jump and shout It's not too far back on the highway not so long a ride You park the car out in the open you can walk inside A little cutie takes your hat and you can thank her ma'am 'Cause every time you make the scene you find the joint is jammed Oh, Carol Don't let him steal your heart away I'm gonna learn to dance If it takes me all night and day Now, if you want to hear some music like the boys are playing Hold tight, bang your foot don't let it carry you away Don't let the heat overcome you when they play so loud Won't the music intrigue you when they get a crowd Well you can't dance I know you would you could I got my eyes on you, baby, cause you dance so good Oh, Carol Don't let him steal your heart away I'm gonna learn to dance If it takes me all night and day Oh, Carol Don't let him steal your heart away I've got to learn to dance If it takes me all night and day ®© UMG (All rights reserved by the copyright owners. Good job editing, syncing and cleaning up the image.  I've seen the clip you worked from.

Is that Keith Richards' grandson on lead guitar?
Ranger Dan

Their own equipment hadn't arrived in time so they had to use these borrowed guitars made by Klira a German make.

STILL the World's Greatest Rock & Roll Band !
Robert Cross
Brian is thinking "This isn't at all what I had in mind when I put that ad in the music trade paper". It didn't take Jagger and Richards long to shift the band away from blues and toward more commercially popular Rock 'n Roll.

Crazy legs on Mick 11:15-11:20!! Mick "Moves Like Jagger"

Man oh man..... Their music was the best when Brian was still alive. Raw, driving, powerful sound......
flimbambo
Great cover. Have to laugh though. Keith, in his book says he uses to kid the Piss out of Lennon about playing his guitar on his chest- 'Fucking hell John- it's not a violin you know' Look where his guitar is!
Carolyngrace Palmer
best band ever keep on rocking us forever mick and the boys
Noreen Scully
I always thought they made a better blues band than a "rock & roll" band espiacally when Brian was still in the band. They had a savage energy & a merciless driving beat that was never the same after Brian left. Early Stones were the BEST Stones! 😊💕👍
Howlin' Waters
It looks like they're trying to concentrate on the playback track to match it (no amps, Charlie's not hitting the drums or hi-hat, just miming along).  A buddy of mine was in a band that filmed for Saturday Night Live some while ago and he said the playback wasn't loud enough through the studio speakers, and you could hear every one shuffling on the stage, jewelry rattling, etc. while they tried to mimic the playback track for the camera.
Joan Ruiz Jacob
in my opinion, this surpasses Chuck's original

Your right the sound is Brilliant and the video is good too ..cheers for sharing ..top marks 23 now

young Keith Richards looks like Gereth Bale
Andrew Brennan
Playing it LOUD!

It's funny to see someone complaining about the camera work saying they missed Keith's solos. I think the problem is somewhat deeper than that. The band are holding guitars with no straps on them or even STRINGS!

WAY to FAST !
Karl Taylor
Tempo too fast!

Can hardly believe that performances like this and other future giants were shown on WEEKDAY AFTERNOON TALK SHOWS throughout the '60s.  Saw Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin with Big Brother, Sonny and Cher and others.  Didn't catch this one, but I know which program it's from. (sorry I missed it)

My favorite song of the Rolling Stones

I think it was all together a mess... nevertheless... a nice video footage!
CMissMichelle
Mick seems very subdued in this performance, from what they show if him, not all bouncy and jumping around, and full of energy. Could it be from what I said above, they were mad their stuff didn't get there in time and thy had to play someone else's stuff, so they gave a bad performance, not that the camera man was any better.
CMissMichelle
I think that I read or heard that there equipment didn't make it in time for this performance so they had to make do w/ some borrowed crappy, sub-par ,equipment from someone else.

That sounds about right

I was just playing with the words...
ruudtes5
in Holland we have an expression "met de Franse slag" which means: doing it the French way, which means that it is not done properly. The French way of asking The Rolling Stones to perform on national tv to lip synch their hits: "oui oui, come and everything is ready". And then wen they arrive, NOTHING is ready: no guitars, no microphones(!) and no drums. So, a quick search in the studio building results in some rubbish guitars without straps & a basic drums set... and on they went!
Rob Gray
That explains the thumb playing and the fact that Charlie isn't hitting the drums but not the fact that the guitars don't have straps and they were never used before or after this show
ruudtes5
I have a theory: the music they had to "perform" on was at a very low volume
Rob Gray
I've always found the clips from this particular show very odd for several reasons, none of the guitars have straps, Brian and Bill are playing with their thumbs, none of the guitars as far as I know were ever used before this clip or after, and Charlie is so obviously not even making any contact with the drums. Very strange.
Rob Gray
He's referring to the black cap Keith is wearing
ruudtes5
after what hat? I don't see it? who's had who's hat?
stevemelnicola
Keith is wearing Lennon's hat which he got off Dylan who got it off Woody Guthrie who.. I dunno after that!
